"Seed" Potatoes from Tesco?

Options
I only need a few seed potatoes for my potato bags and as the nearest place I can buy seed potatoes is closed I thought I would just use potatoes I bought at my local Tesco.
What early potatoes could I buy from Tesco to put in my potato bags?
Would Maris Piper be any good?

Comments

  • Last year was the first time I grew potatoes. I used ‘eyes’ from shop bought potatoes - usually Maris Piper. I was quite successful.

If you want early potatoes then Maris Piper are no good as they are a Maincrop potato.  The equivalent early potato would be Maris Peer although I don't think you'd get those in the SM.

We just plant anything that goes sprouty in the cupboard. They are very easy to grow. I think seed potatoes are a waste of money tbh

I got some Charlottes (nice salad potatoes, and can be roasted in their skins) from Aldi at a very good price. They had a couple of other varieties as well, including Maris Piper.

Think I'll have a look for some Charlottes (but will have to look in Mr Ts as I don't go to Aldi).  I think they are a great potato and agree they're really good roasted.

I popped into £Stretchers earlier and noticed that they are selling small packs of various seed potatoes including Charlotte salad potatoes.  I thought they were quite a good price at £.49 for 8 potatoes and you're more likely to get a good crop from a proper seed potato than a SM one.
