I want to experiment with making my own cleaning solutions, my first attempt will be window cleaner. Now I have a formula :

1 cup rubbing alcohol (“surgical spirits” in the UK)

  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 3 drops dishwashing liquid
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Squeegee and microfiber cloth

What I was wondering though is surgical spirits the same as in methylated spirits, if not is it a good substitute?

I would be glad to here your views and formula for home cleaners.

Surgical spirit is the British equivalent of rubbing alcohol.
Are methylated spirits the same things as rubbing alcohol? Unlike rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol, also known as "methylated spirits", contains methanol
Harsh chemicals such as methylated spirits, mineral turpentine and paint thinners will only cause the plastic to discolour and scratch over time.
For perfectly clear windows, you can add a few drops of methylated spirits to a clean, dry and lint-free cloth and give the windows a wipe down. The methylated spirits will evaporate within a few seconds leaving crystal clear and shiny windows behind.

Therefore It might be ok for the glass, but I would be careful using methylated spirits near your window sills, (if they are UPVC), as it'll ruin them.

I have a 'recipe'  for a window cleaner but I go with vinegar instead of SS and a dollop of WU liquid.
