Quality of Spectacle Lenses?

Just had an eye test yesterday as I've felt my vision hasn't been great lately.
However, my prescription has barely changed - making me wonder: Do the lenses used by different companies vary in the quality of the image I'm seeing?

My last few sets came from glasses direct, they're so cheap its almost unbelievable.  But it does make me wonder HOW they manage to be so cheap.  Are their lenses poor quality?

I'm happy to pay more for a better quality of vision, but equally I'm not one for throwing money at a brand just for the badge on the box.
Does anyone actually know about this stuff?  Google searches are hard, as of course everyone who sells glasses will always say their product is great.

Up to a point assume you are talking plastic. Glass is always better optically but little sold these days.
Their is a big diffence between a nice coated nikon lens to a standard coated lens.
Their is little diffrence between lenses with no coating.
