Accident at Work

[Deleted User] said:Yes I didn’t want to include so many details but yes usually our outdoor food refuse is just emptied into an outdoor wheely type bin in a bin shed so you just used to put the food bin down flip the lid on the larger bin and lift and tip the food bin in. It was a job I have done by myself before, abet it is heavy but just about manageable (not sure how accurate my estimate of weight is) Due to many, many issues with very poor maintenance this time when I went out the wheely type bin and it had not been emptied and was crawling with maggots. So I had no choice but to try and put it in the industrial bin but due to its location and it couldn’t be moved due to the general mess so I had to try and hold the lid open (I’m 5ft so on tip toes) and then balance the food bin in the other arm and try and tip it in whilst doing this balancing act I lost my grip on the lid which almost landed on my head so I must have just completely twisted myself in the process of trying to stop it, difficult to explain but I hope you can imagine.
Why did I do it, I suppose I felt (as explained above) that if I didn’t I wouldn’t have been doing what was clearly expected, and would have got a bollocking if it wasn’t done, this was made worse by the fact I had handed in my notice. I did also ask for help after this incident and did feel rather belittled.Sorry its a really dull story, with lots of little details that I probably still missed.
So you decided off your own back to use a different bin than normal and this is where the accident occurred. Many accidents happen when someone does something different or new at work because they feel it's a better course of action.
Just remember in future to always risk assess a new way of doing something and if your unsure of the risks or it seems riskier then just stop. Even if you got told off for not doing you can just say it was too risky and you didn't want to injure yourself. It's better to be told off than injured!. You need to think of yourself.
Also the fact you handed in your notice and were leaving it would have made people even less worried about being told off.0
