My Pixel XL won't boot :(

Everything was fine until yesterday when it suddenly froze, then switched off and I couldn't get it to switch on again. Tried leaving it to charge overnight (though it had plenty of charge before). Still no luck. If I hold power button and volume down button down, I can get to the screen with the android robot on it's side, with options for start, restart bootloader, recovery mode, barcodes, power off. Recovery mode fails, start and restart bootloader end up with blank screen again. Searching online several places suggest starting in safe mode, but there doesn't seem to be an option for that. The only thing I wonder is if this was caused by installing TikTok on my phone, which I had done about 15 minutes before it died.
I haven't tried factory reset yet as I'd like to at least get some data off the phone first.
Any suggestions?

If you set up your Google Sync options then all your contacts, photos and what not should be in your online Google account:

So as long as that's the case and you can see them by signing in online, you've really nothing to lose with a reset.  When you get the phone up and running again and sign back into the account, the data should come back down again.

Did you get TikTok from the google play store - or elsewhere?

I don't know why but in spite of setting up options to sync contacts etc with Google they don't all do that. So some are synced and some not.
