Dental check ok and filling came out required two weeks later

I had a dental check up and hygienist appt costing me more than £90 on the NHS. They both reported excellent teeth and good oral hygiene. Two weeks later whilst using electric brush to clean my teeth. I noticed a small what looked like a chipped tooth came out leaving a big hole in tooth. Getting an appt to the dentist was difficult. Anyway I did manage to get one. I paid band 1 on first visit check up only. it seems I will need to pay band 2 for the filling. If this was picked  up on check up I would have paid only Band 2. Will I be unreasonable to ask that the dentist should charge me only once band 2 and not band 1 and band 2. Thanks

  • First things first , your check up might be NHS but hygienist appointments are not on the NHS and you will have paid a private charge for this.
The dentist has no leeway on charging they have to follow regulations. The dentist can reopen the course of treatment if your filling is done within two months of the check up. Then you would only pay the difference between band one and two. However if it is outside of this time you will have to pay a complete band two payment .

Very good advice. I will do that. Had dental check up on the 9th Feb and managed to get appt for filling next week 3rd March due to a cancellation. Previously it was booked in May. I was not sure how to ask about it but you have given me the right words to approach him.

Just to say, if your tooth was not broken at the time of the examination then there is no way the dentist could have known it was going to break within the next 2 weeks. So its not their fault if it happened later.
