How long for a voluntary NI payment to register

Apologies if my terminology is incorrect.
I'm retired. Phoned DWP a couple of weeks ago regarding gaps (since retirement) in my NI contributions, to cut a long story short I needed to make up 2018/19 before 5th April 2021 to ensure I get my max state pension when I'm 66 later this year. There are other gaps too but the deadline is later for those. Early last week I phoned HMRC and they generated a reference for me to use when paying, I then paid by phoning the bank. I don't do online banking yet. I've checked just now and the gap is still showing. How long do I need to wait before I phone HMRC to find out what's going on?
Thanks for any advice.

Crikey, in these times of automation I had no idea it might be that long. Trouble is that might be beyond the deadline for payment. Is the process totally reliable?

As you do telephone banking, give it another couple of days and then ring and get a telephone statement of recent transactions. If your payment has gone through, and you're sure you gave the correct reference, then you really don't need to worry.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • I made a payment in October. After 8 weeks it still hadn’t registered so I called them. It then took another couple of weeks to register.

If you ring HMRC they can check there and then that it's been received and probably update your record too. They did mine while I was on the phone.
  • Yes I agree, I waited two weeks and then I phoned them, they did it straight away and you should see it online the same day.

What information did you need to hand? Did you need the reference number you were given for the payment.

No, just needed NI number although I had the reference number ready just in case.
