Lost Supperanuation

In 1979 my firm went bust  and I had been paying supperanuation for sixteen years I was told the government  would freeze it till I was sixty five then I could claim it.
When I retired in twenty ten I got in touch with the pension service and they said they had no record of it so I  got in touch with the pension search people but they could not
help so I got in touch with the Onbudsman but he could not help all he said was people sometimes bought these up but how can that happen when I paid this money
and I am still alive. Is there anything else I can try ?. Thank you.

    Long life food? :)

    Below seems relevant.

What if my company went bust before April 2005?

The Pension Protection Fund only applies to companies and employers that went bust on or after 6 April 2005. Prior to that, the Financial Assistance Scheme was introduced to cover the pensions in companies that went bust between 6 April 1997 and 5 April 2005. Similar to the Pension Protection Fund, it pays out 90% of the benefits you would have received, and a cap of £33,454 a year applies.  For employers that went bust prior to that, there was no formal protection scheme in place. Trustees - a group that manages a pension scheme - were legally obliged to transfer the pension benefits to an insurance company through a 'buy-out'. There was no legal obligation to do so before April 1997. So if you have a pension in a company that went bust prior to that, you may have lost some or all of your pension. You can track down old pensions using the government's pension tracing service, to find out which insurer took over your company's pension.  If that doesn't yield any results, you could use Companies House to find the contact details of the administrator or the insolvency practitioner that dealt with the winding up of the company to see if they have any records on what happened to the pension.

Who told you this and when?

If an employer went bust back then, and the pension scheme didn't have enough money to meet it liabilities, the pensioners were the first call on any funds available, with everyone else tagging after - and if there was nothing left once pensions in payment had been secured, the harsh reality was that everyone else lost out.

The government would only have been involved to the extent that you had any state additional pension (at the time it would have been Graduated Pension and then SERPS) built up while you were employed by the company in question.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

What is the name of the firm? Possible it was bought in administration and they took over the pension scheme.  How old were you when you joined the pension scheme? Did you keep any paperwork? I would write to the National Insurance Contributions Agency. They have a record of all your employers. When you say pension service what is this? Do you mean the Pension Tracing Service? Because it was in 1979 there was no protection. People never keep paperwork and this is about money so it is important. Good luck.

It may be worth contact B&CE on the details in the link, to see if they can shed any light on it.

B&CE is now The Peoples Pension.
This sounds like it could be the Lump Sum Retirement Benefit Scheme (LSRB) as the time fits with that

Building And Civil Engineering Benefits Scheme this is the scheme name it provided. Quote the scheme name and your national insurance number when you speak to them as well as the name of your former employer. If you have other pensions I suggest you write to them and tell them of your address so they can write to you when your benefits are due.
