Anyone semi-retired?

  • I've been working half a week flexibly retired. It's was no brainer for me, as because of protections, I am actually taking home more money than I was working the full week.

It's been great. I've loads of free time for (pre-Covid) holidays, hobbies etc but I get to keep my brain ticking over. Work is so less stressful and it's given me a whole new attitude. It's probably because I know I could walk out anytime, as this part-time work feels more like extra pocket money rather than the obligatory grind.

It's also been an excellent way to ease me into full retirement, rather than the precipitous cliff edge of full time work to full retirement overnight.

  • What does “flexibly retired” mean ? Are you drawing a pension ? Is it the case that you’re not retired but simply working part-time ?.
I will drop to 3 days from May (currently 4), and start a phased wind-down from Jan where I reduce to 2 days for 3 months.

I've been contracting in IT for the last 4 years and worked at a number of large organisations. I was surprised at how many people in their 20s and 30s chose to work 4 or 3 days a week and no one batted an eyelid.

I am taking my full (work) pension, and I work half  a week. I consider myself to be both retired and in employment, simultaneously!
