14 days of NSD can it be done?

Options
Well the freezer is bursting to full, we have more than enough toiletries to last a month, never mind 14 days (thanks to Father Xmas) and I could sell on the amount of household cleaning materials we currently have, so enough is enough.
Today I have decided to challenge myself (and OH) to a 14 day NSD challenge. Can't say it will be easy, we love our fresh fruit and veg and heaven knows what we will do when we run out of loo roll, but we are up for the challenge! We love cooking and most meals are made from scratch, so here goes... I will post every day what meals we have had. I'm sure it will get interesting towards the end!
For context, there are just the 2 of us. I am currently WFH and OH works split shifts so we are both here for the 3 meals per day, plus snacks.
When I say NSD, that means no emergencies, no milk, no bread etc. I have plenty of milk in and one and a half loaves of bread, when it's gone, it's gone. Eek! Wish us luck!

Good luck for you! Is that 14 days together or though out the month?? My freezer and stores are jammed pack too!! I only have milk on my cereal or sometimes milkshake when I remember to get the powder!!

I enjoy cooking from strach and baking too which isnt good on the wasit line though!!
Only me and my dog here.

Make your own bread mines hit and miss at times!! Look forward to seeing updates too
    1 /10 nsd 😀
  • Thanks Berries, It's the next 14 days straight  :# If we can, but we are up for the challenge!
  • Hmm, I have decided to count yesterday as Day 1 of this challenge as it was a NSD also.

I already have learnings. Had I planned to do this for 14 days (rather than just on a whim, being fed up of the freezer(s) being full), I might have planned it better. I can already see some issues. We love potatoes (should have bought a sack before starting this). We are going to run out very quickly, might have to box this a bit clever when it comes to a roast on Sunday...

Anyhow, here is how Day 1 and 2 are looking.
    Day 1 (yesterday)
Breakfast; Me, Crumpets with Honey, OH, Toast and a banana
Lunch; We shared a Chicken thin and crispy pizza out of the freezer, served with the last of  the pot of coleslaw out of the fridge
Dinner; Sausage casserole with mash (I mixed sweet potato and ordinary potatoes together). Added peppers, and leeks to the casserole. Was very nice.

    Day 2 (Today)
Breakfast; Me, Crumpet, half an orange, OH, Running late for work took a couple of Pain au chocolate out of the cupboard
Lunch; Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil salad, served with garlic bread (Not garlic bread like the french stick style ones, I used the crusts from loaf, toast under the grill and when almost done, rub half a clove a garlic lightly across.) Delicious for soaking up the oil and balsamic from the salad! I grow some fresh herbs, Basil being one of them. I have 2 pots of basil, neither of them are looking happy at the mo, picked the best I could.
Planned dinner; Beef Kofta's in Flatbread's with Yogurt, Mango chutney and coriander (I don't grow this, needs using up out the fridge) maybe add some diced up red onion and cucumber to freshen it up a bit, followed by Pancakes of course! (With Orange, Lemon and Sugar!)

@Agentmomo do you have any butternut squash?  It's a great substitute for potatoes, particularly roasted.  I always buy some when they're on special offer or YS, also grow a few so tend to have them in the cupboard to use anytime up until about April/ May.

  • @joedenise that sounds like a great idea. I don't have any butternut squash in at the moment but will certainly use that idea in the future. Thank you  :)
  • Well I never knew how exhausting this would be! I thought I was organised before but now I have gone into overdrive! Meal planning 2 days in advance and really thinking about what we waste also.

So tonight turkey curry prepared for dinner tomorrow. Yes that is cooked left over Xmas turkey taken from the freezer today  :open_mouth: I think turkey works really well in curries, used half a jar of curry paste that was lurking in the fridge, added onions, garlic, coriander stalks and coconut milk, we will have with rice.

I opened a double cream before I started this challenge on Sunday, need to think how to use this up so I have took out some chicken thighs from the freezer which I will combine with leeks and double cream and make a chicken and leek pie for Thursday dinner. If any cream left over I will make a dauphinoise potato dish for the early weekend I think.

Really trying to use up our fresh ingredients first during this challenge, however both OH and I really fancied a tuna / pasta salad so that is made for lunch tomorrow, only fresh ingredient is a spring onion. Bit naughty when this will only be day 3 lunch but we fancied it so what the hell....

On a positive note, a new love discovered for pancakes so the left over mix made today will be used for breakfast tomorrow.

Or mix with another root veg, we like it with swede (clapshot/neeps and tatties) or with carrots mashed in.

  • To save going to the supermarket and being exposed to covid19 virus  I regularly have 14 NSD and sometimes it's 21 days between shops.
Wow that's a great achievement @littlemoney. Do you find it easy going so long without shopping?
