Incoming boosting - for students

Options
For those of you who are students, or perhaps in the proximity of a university, the psychology departments usually offer a small sum of money in exchange for your participation in various experiments. Not only do you get paid, but you get to help with some scientific research (which is generally quite interesting). Depending on the experiments, you can be paid from £3 upwards per experiment depending on duration. This kind of stuff is usually cash in hand too so no worrying about the taxman ;)

I haven't checked all the old posts on this notice board, so apologies if I've just repeated what someone else has already said.

    Does this involve experimental brainwashing?
Will I come out a six stone raving looney (looking like Michael Jackson)?

    Do itashimashite.

It depends on the research interests of the psychology department in question, but a lot of the experiments will be computer based, asking you a series of questions. For example, a study on perception might entail looking at a series of human faces and asking "which looks healthiest/which one do you find most attractive"? etc Other studies I've seen posters looking for people who have suffered from depression (and also those who haven't) for a study on how mood affects the ability to solve personal problems. I've seen other posters looking for asian/chinese participants and the over 60s. It varies. You just have to be on the lookout for these posters, which are generallly found out and about in the community surrounding the university.

Also, I saw this on another board:

In the psychology department, the researchers down there need a lot of volunteers for their experiments... which usually just involves pressing a lot of buttons and is tediously boring but the pay rate is £6/hr - but worth it if you have an hr gap between lectures. I'm already a six stone raving loony, wil I come out normal? :rotfl:
  • I'm sure the psychologists would find you both very interesting subjects! :D

Anyone know if I can change the heading of this thread? Clearly the psychology departments aren't only looking for students, it's a bit misleading and might put people off reading it.
  • Can you change the title if you click edit?

Hmmm I might try contacting the psychology departments of the local unis and enquiring if a six stone English-speaking raving loony with a penchant for hot Argentinian totty fits their profile :rotfl:

how do you get paid, do they inform you of new studies?
    :footie:
  • It's all cash in hand as far as I'm aware. Depending on what it's for, they may or may not contact you again. If it's not a one off experiment (ie. PhD students advertising for a certain category of people to collect data for their thesis), then there might even be a register at each university that you can put your name on.
  • Our Uni do it alot. It's not just psychology related courses though!

I'm doing nutrition & dietetics.. next year for my dissertation I'll probably need voulenteers.

Usually emails are sent/messages posted on the internal forum explaining what the practice will involve.

It's worth a look at to be honest, I mean my voulenteer this year only needed to provide me with an honest diet & activity diary.. in return he got an extensive study on his diet & activity state which you would have to pay for if someone more qualified did it for you.

A recent one was having to do a 15minute session where there was exercise, rest routine.. heart rates were monitored. That's it! They only got paid £3, but got a free meal too!

Most of the ones posted with our Uni are around £10 + free meal.

Ours are done online via email or forums, and yes as far as I know it's cash in hand!

Collect what? The money? It helps to be living near a university because you have to go in to participate in the study and they give you money at the end of it.
