One more question- related to definition of "Earnings", when it says you have an allowance of 100% of earnings
I know the allowance is gross, includes the tax relief and employer's contribution, but is annual 'earnings' calculated as employed + self employed income, but not including savings income?

Good article with "relevant earnings" covered, and confirms my observation, that 'earnings' are different from 'income' in this respect.
