Intrum - to pay or not to pay?

I have a debt of £3930.72 from twelve years ago.
Intrum has offered to write off 50% of the debt (they been offering me various monthly deals for over a year).
I would like to apply for a mortgage in the next year to so, so my question is should I pay the £1,965.36 - will it increase my credit file - which is at good at the moment.
When I rung to make a payment to Intrum in December the customer service lady told me that because my debt is so old it won't show up as paid on my credit file - is that true? I chose not to pay it then due to her saying that.

You need to check your credit file - there are free services from all the three major agencies or you can request a statutory report from each of them:

    Experian - mse credit club
    Equifax - clearscore
    transunion - credit karma

The likelihood is that this is more than six years since the default date and so will not affect your credit report one iota.

It will also (if you haven't been paying it it the meantime) be statute barred so intrum are stuck with a worthless unenforceable account.

It's up to to you of you want to contribute to their profits.
  • They can't make you pay anything, and it's not going to have any bearing on your credit records. Send the 'Statute Barred' letter, and that will be the end of it.

Are you not aware of the limitation act ?

Debts not paid or acknowledged in writing for over 6 years will become statute barred, which means the creditor cannot take legal action against you, so you do not have to pay.

The debt is no longer on your credit file so paying it will only make your wallet lighter, and increase Intrum`s profit line.

As above, send the statute barred letter.
