Reduce council tax for living on an unadopted road?

Options
Hi all
I suspect this is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success getting a council tax discount as they live on an unadopted road? (I.e. the road isn't maintained by the council, there are no street lights, potholes aren't fixed, trees aren't maintained, rubbish isn't cleared etc. - the council do absolutely nothing!)
As I say, I fear the answer from my council will be no, but if anyone else has had success for the same reason that would give me precedent to cite...
Thank you.

Why do you think that would result in a discount?

Everyone has a different level of use for services.  Some use the libraries, some do not.  You dont get a discount for not using the library.

No streetlights is a good thing.

  • Ah, yes, they do empty the bins once a fortnight, usually.
The library is there if one chooses to use it, but we don't have the option of getting potholes fixed etc., so not quite the same.
    Shame, but feared as much.

You need to start talking to the rest of the people on the road to club together to sort the potholes out.
As it is unadopted then it falls on the owners along it to do something about it if they so wish, including rubbish clearance, grass and tree maintenance etc

And the binmen / postie etc could refuse to come up it if they consider it dangerous !

We do this. I object to the level of CT we pay for the level of services we receive.

It is the same for everyone. I would be very surprised if anyone uses all of the services available.
If you don't have children should you get a discount for not using school (or opt out of state schooling and send to a private school)?
If you aren't old and don't require any form of care should you get a discount?
I assume you chose where to live. If it's a big issue you could always move to somewhere else.

Council Tax is not a payment for services, it helps fund local government spending. Your CT bill will tell you how the money is distributed.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Council tax is crudely based on property value and similar properties in different locations may be in different council tax bands.  So if there were a significant difference in house desirability, and so ratable value, from needing to pay for the road upkeep etc then it would already have been taken into account.
Most of the road I drive along and appreciate potholes being repaired is not the bit just outside my house.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

If you bring it up to standard then you can ask the council to adopt it.
