Furloughed without notice

Hi, I was told, by my line manager, at 2 o’clock on Thursday last week that I was on furlough as of the next day. She had been instructed by our boss (by phone) to do this. There was no discussion and no indication of how long it might last.  I am not the first of his staff to be informed in this way, or worse still by text message. Surely this is not right?

You have to agree to be furloughed, it cannot be imposed. However since the alternative is likely to be redundancy (with appropriate notice & payment) most people are going to agree. Since you (nominally) agree then there is no particular obligation on the employer as to method or amount of notice.

What do you want as an outcome?
How long have you worked there? <2 years & you have very little protection & rocking the boat is unlikely to end well
