I'm a bit lost.... I feel I've already answered your query re surrender and making it clear (in writing) that you didn't. It's just a simple case of writing/emailing the landlord and asking what progress has been made and when can you move back in as continuation of your tenancy.

Of course it helps that the landlord asked by email for the keys to be returned. Keep that email.
