Hello MSE Forum!

The famous MSE Ant here with hopefully an interesting one for you.
I was snooping around the forum the other day and stumbled across this interesting old thread from a Forumite who wanted to know if the £200 they spent, as part of a couple, on food shopping per month (excluding lunches) was a lot.
As this was a few years back and since then things have changed, I was wondering... couples, how much do you spend on food shopping a month?

Following with interest.  Hub is planning to retire in the next year and I'm ashamed to say I don't know just how much we spend. We are 2 1/2 as I purchase some items for my daughter.
The last time I logged food spends was probably 2008, so a review long overdue.  At that time it was 4 of us with a vegetarian in the family.  We were 200-250 at that time for food only. No booze.  No TP, cleaningmaterials or personal care items. For 4,sending packed lunches with 2.

I know we eat quite a few things these days are more expensive!

£200 sounds about right - but then you need to add on the cost of the booze cupboard!  That would include the cost of cleaning products, loo rolls, shampoo etc etc AND buying most of our meat from local butchers.

We spend about £180. This doesn't include booze though as that is a separate budget. it does include meat, packed lunches, and occasional treats. We definitely have some wastage but not as much as we used to and so that is what I'm aiming to reduce.

  • I'd say the two of us spend about £300 pm. That includes some household products but we also buy meat at our local butchers and some at Costc*
  • For everything ( all food, drinks, toiletries and cleaning products, alcohol ) for us both, as well as our adult son who has food issues due to his Aspergers,  we have been spending around £170 per month. We never have takeaways or eat out.
Recently prices seem to be creeping up so I have asked for an increase in my allowance to £200.  Our only income is hubby’s pension.

My household is just me and DH.  Our monthly “Housekeeping Budget” is split as follows but we don’t raid every pot every month: -

£140 - general groceries/supermarket spends (tracked in the Grocery Challenge)
£ 40 - Meat Fund (usually spent at the butcher shop once every 2-3 months)
£ 40 - Bulk Fund (spent on bulk buying stuff and alcohol)
£ 20 - Christmas Fund (for the tree and goose)
£ 10 - Garden Fund (for seeds, compost, plants, etc)
    ——-
    £250

  • More around £400 a month. I think
    Friendly greeting!
  • We spend around £300/month.  But now that we are both working from home it also includes homemade breakfasts and lunches.
  • Reading others budgets tells me I should be spending a great deal less- but I do not drink and I do love top quality food products so I am spending for one- what most seem to be budgeting for two, I am a vegetarian and dairy free so my milk costs me £1.70 a litre and that must come to over £25  a month just for the one product. I never buy ready meals and even make my own humous-  I think I am going against the period in my life when my mortgage was 16.25% and I was really struggling to eat- so now I refuse to have s strict food budget- but highly recommend others do and get mortgage free asap.
