You could have delayed buying the railcard until the date you were due to travel and buy it at the ticket office or not get one at all if you had abandoned the idea of travelling by train.
Many stations are unmanned, so can not be bought at a ticket office.

I buy the 3 year one for £70 will expire August this year. I don't travel long distance but travel from West Yorkshire to Manchester most weeks. So far I have saved £300 on normal prices after taking of the £70
