Just wanted to reiterate that the other person I bought a charity gift for was delighted with their present so they obviously work for some people.

tbh I was more disgusted with the whole having the cheek to ring up and coplain about a Christmas present than the fact that he'd been mean about a charity gift. I used to get a rollocking every year as a child from my Gran if my uncle didn't get his thank you note before 12th night!

My Mum did once ask for a decommisioned kalashnikov for Christmas  but I never managed to source one. Apparently they are bought up, taken out of active use and recyclyed into ploughshares or something.

That probably turned out to be the best present you ever bought!! I'm going to try that - thanks and it's a great idea anyway

Hmm I always felt that the ultimate responsibility in Orkney fell to social services myself.

Hmm not sure what I think about this one. I read that someone had given a charity gift on behalf of a school (instead of teachers presents) which I thought was quite a nice idea. I'm not sure how I would feel about getting a pig (althought wouldn't react like the Chicken Uncle!!!).

I think I'm a bit of a traditionalist. Its not the material goods or amount spent on me, and one of my favourite gifts last year was a Gingerbreadman that someone had made - the thought and time gone into it were really great!!

I'm also not sure that I like the "don't send xmas cards". I've recently had an e-mail off someone saying "we're not sending cards this year, and will donate the money to charity" - but knowing what those individuals are like, I very very much doubt any charity will see that money. However, great if they do donate!! Other peopple say don't send them as its not "green" and a few people have made me feel quite uncomfortable about sending cards in the past few years - when surely its my choice if I want to or not??? Exactly the same as it is their choice if they do/don't send.

Anyway, I think if I was offered a pig, I'd probably say "no thanks and if you don't want to buy me an actual gift then thats also fine" I wouldn't be narked, nor would I have an unwanted pig forced upon me!!

I'll just have a merry xmas with my gingerbread man and xmas card haha!!

My friend comes from a family of bigotted racists - so she bought them a gift goat just to watch their faces :D

I am making a donation to his favourite charity on behalf of my brother this year...he buys anything he wants and has no great sense of tradition ( don't know where I got him from!) so he will be happy with this....did get him small book on bonsai and candlestick matching his dinner service (€2 in charity shop) just to have a gift for him on the day.

I agree with jamtart that I would rather have as a gift something that was home made and cost cents than something bought for a huge amount
