Pension contribution made after pension was surrendered

Hi everyone, I am new here. I recently retired and so I definitely need to save money! I have searched the forums but most posts seem to be about getting a refund of contributions after they have been invested into a pension so my case is slightly different. Unfortunately my pension was surrendered to be put into a drawdown product a few days before my final pension contribution was received. This money has been returned to my employer by the pension company but I am having trouble getting my (ex) employer to return it to me. Surely they are not entitled to keep it as it was part of my remuneration package? In any case 2.5% of it was my contribution and 8% was theirs so I should at least get 2.5% of it? I do realise that if any of it is returned to me it will be taxed. Every time I ask them about it they say they are looking into it but it has been almost 5 months now. Thanks for any help anyone can give.
