Pension underpaid for 13 years.

Hi All,
Just been chatting to my Dad (not seen him for ages due to Covid) and he read a letter to me. One of his company pensions had an 'internal review' and found that upon commencement 13 years ago they calculated his monthly payment wrong. Pension underpaid for 13 years, his latest letter states they have paid him over £7000 into his bank. My parents are old school, no credit cards, no internet - so their weekly shop is also trip to bank on Sat.
One question - the letter said it is his responsibility to inform HRMC for tax purposes, a one off £7000 takes him into tax, £40 ish a month most likely wouldn't have. Is there a standard way to sort it?
Thanks
Nigel
