Stuck with my career and future

Hello all,
Hope everyone is keeping safe. I am so stuck with my career and I am not sure what steps to take next. I have been an accountant for 13 years, and i have no passion or motivation to continue with it. Was made redundant back in April 2021, and since then I have been in two minds about the career. Do I stick with it just to earn some money, or try and pursue something else.
I cannot stand working in a corporate environment anymore, with high levels of stress, long hours and pathetic staff.
Has anybody ever moved away from accountancy/finance/ Corporate career and pursued something else? Would be great to know your thoughts on what options I have.

Thank you,

  • Being happy at work and loving what you do is an overall productivity booster and enhances performance. People who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be optimistic, motivated, learn faster, make fewer mistakes, and better business decisions. I moved from hospitality to programming. Totally worth it!!

When I was working my accountant was an ex-Deloitte chap who had become disillusioned with the corporate world and set up his own accountancy business with one associate.  Not a move away from the job, but a move into a completely different environment.

Another acquaintance was a senior IT project manager who gave it all up to start his own business making bespoke oak timber-frames for many and varied building projects.  Big change of job, big change of environment, big change of lifestyle.

i changed career but found it difficult.  always hard when you are in a job that you do not like, especially an accountant as you would spent a lot of your life studying for the qualifications if you are a qualified accountant.

it is difficult to advise as it will very much depend on you and your own circumstance as to whether you can make it in another industry or would get the opportunity to do so.

you could consider teaching the subject at uni if you are a qualified accountant as teaching would be a more rewarding job even though it may have a lower pay than working in industry, but the public pension will make up the difference.

have you looked into where you could move you?  where you think your skills may be transferable?
