Washing machine taps won't turn off!

I'm trying to disconnect my old washing machine, but one of the two taps connected to it won't turn off fully! Its the hot feed, and i can't quite get the tap to 3oclock position (6 oclock is on, 3 oclock is off). Any ideas guys?
I hear the cry of the silence around me.

Do you have the taps with the red and blue lever turns ??

If so, take out the screw that holds the red lever in place and turn the square shaft under it with a adjustable spanner or pliers until its off.

Quite often the plastic lever deteriorates.

Just drain the hot water tank durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!
  • These taps are useless, they seize up usually because of limescale, so that when you need them they won't turn off. The first thing you have to do is turn off at the mains so you can replace them, thereby defeating the point of having them in the first place! Having replaced them, the next time you need them they're scaled back up so you then have to replace them all over again.
How to keep the irishman amused for hours.
Next time mine go I'll replace them with ordinary stoptaps so that they don't sieze.

stoptaps are not recommended for hot water, you should use a gate valve

But a gate valve just regulates the flow, a stoptap stops it, hence the name.
Gate valves are for where you need a lower flow resistance than a tap when they're turned on, they'll just drip if you use them as a stop tap. If you have tanked hot water and low pressure (I don't), then the low resistance of a gate valve might be advantageous, but that still leaves you with the dripping when it's off.

Please do elaborate. I'd like to know what it is that will keep me amused that won't do for other nationalities?
