National insurance contributions

Hi guys cant seem to find an answer to this on HMRC website or on this forum.
I was made Bankrupt in Dec 2020 and I am self employed. Just completed my tax return for 19/20 and I need to pay class 4 NI as per my profit for that year.
Is this included in my Bankruptcy or do I proceed to pay this and inform the OR that I have done so.
Thanks

This is more of a specialist question, HMRC may be your best port of call.

Yes it is a debt in your bankruptcy. As soon as you were made bankrupt you should have spoken to HMRC and got a new unique taxpayer reference number. Then any monies owed before your bankruptcy order vest in your bankruptcy, and you pay any liabilities owed on subsequent earnings via the new reference number.

Talk to your OR and let them know.

HMRC have sent a letter confirming I will get a New UTR in April, I received this in mid January.

Ive spoke to both HMRC and the OR office today, OR office have said they have yet to receive a final claim from HMRC as to what is owed so they cant comment any further and HMRC have said just refer it back to the insolvency practitioner.

So at the moment Ive told HMRC to add this note on my file that we had this conversation and wait for HMRC to process my claim and send it to the OR to show what NI/Tax is owed and that to be added to my bankruptcy. Well I’m hoping thats how it works out.

Just hang tight for now then. HMRC won’t have submitted a claim to the OR yet if you’ve openly just submitted your return. Give it a few weeks. It will vest in your bankruptcy though when they issue it as the money was owed prior to the bankruptcy order.

Interested to hear they’re not giving you a new UTR until the next tax year.

Let us know how it pans out if you don’t mind.
