I have the opposite - can sacrifice pension in return for more salary.
  • I'm on SS but no idea if the company pass on the NI savings, how would I know?
By the amount going into your pension.

As there is no pension tax relief with salary sacrifice it is fairly easy to check, you sacrifice say £200 and your employer matches you then £400 gets added to your pension with no tax relief added on top like there would be (on your part) with a "relief at source" contribution.

So if say £420 is actually being added to your pension it is going to be your employer chipping in some of their NIC saving.

When learning about SS on this forum and seeing very little 'wrong' with it, I put it to my employer. It sounded like a total win-win for us both.

My employer flat out refused it and told me to look in to it further as to why.
I did and couldn't find anything negative. They'd be better off as would I. I was stumped so went back to them and asked them to explain.

They said for a start, they would have to pay people who were off on the sick. This was "just one of" the reasons they weren't going to do it.
That was my (small) employer's reasoning too - that they would have to pay pension contributions for those either sick or on maternity leave. The company is female heavy.
I explained that it would reduce any redundancy payment but it wasn't enough to clinch it for them.

Oh yes and my employer has refused to give anyone a pay rise for years because they had to auto enrol everyone. We get nothing above the statutory minimum.

Our company has perhaps 60-80 employees. A mixture of male and female. There's been plenty of females going off having kids but there's also been a good number on sick leave. Frequent sick leave, clearly bogus sick leave and long term sick leave (i fell in to that category a few times myself).
Bottom line, they just don't like giving anything for nothing and paying while someone is on leave will be seen as for nothing
