HMRC records show I worked for an employer from whom I withdrew my application before starting

Hello,
I was hoping someone could help me. On my HMRC online account, they claim I worked for an employer, however I withdrew my application in the middle of going through employment checks, before I was meant to start the role. I never started working with them. The employer is DWP (Department for Work and Pensions). I received a job offer from them, which I initially accepted, however I received a better job offer and during the pre-employment checks with DWP I withdrew my application and never started with them. Now, the HMRC records show that I indeed started working with them and that they paid me two salaries in October and November, from which they deducted tax and NI. I never received this money though, and it's false information. This means all my tax records are now wrong.
I contacted DWP, but because it's such a huge organisation they haven't responded, and so far I've been unable to get any help from them. I also contacted HMRC, but they said I needed to contact DWP to resolve this. Basically, I need those records completely removed from HMRC system as it affects my tax records.
To make matters worse, DWP sent me a P45 stating that I ended employment with them! I never even started it...
Does anyone know what I can do, who to contact? I feel hopeless, as I'm dealing with such a huge organisation as DWP and they just keep ignoring me. How easy is it to remove those records and cancel those claims?

You could try writing to DWP complaints section. I am sure that they are more geared up o deal with complaints from members of the public but I would expect them to have formal processes regarding timescales to respond etc .

Dealing with HMRC is a nightmare . I would however write to them (keep a copy and proof of postage / read receipt for e-mails) setting out the issue, the dates and amounts involved, the dates of the previous contacts you've had with them and what you were told, your attempts to contact DWP.

Ask them specifically to contact DWP to query the entries . You could try the helpline
Telephone: 0300 200 3300 and ask the options are as DWP is not responding.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

    That ain't going to happen.

The best outcome you are realistically going to get is that DWP file an amended Real Time Information report to HMRC to show that in reality you were not paid anything and no tax or NIC was deducted.

Nothing will change until DWP file the revised details.

  • You could involve your MP. No experience myself.
I don’t think the problem is all HMRC so you will have to keep up the trying to contact DWP.
I have/did have an Attachment of Earnings with good old DWP and despite responses on this forum they confirm it as paid - well, never did receive confirmation of it being paid and that was mid December.

Have you spoken to the organisation concerned at any time?

Seems strange to receive a P45 showing two months salary and deductions if you were never on the payroll.  These forms are generated automatically from the payroll system aren't they?  So, assuming there is some human error involved somewhere, I'm just trying to think at which point it would have occurred.

Looking at your other thread, you are working for the Civil Service but in a different department. Any chance someone in your current workplace might be able to help?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
