Mortgage protection confusion

Hi. I don’t know if anyone can help but my ex partner and I had a mortgage together for 20 odd years. He died last year and had a mortgage protection payment that he paid every month. When I wrote to LLOYDS about it they said it didn’t cover death only sickness and redundancy but I know he took it out on the understanding that it was for death purposes as well. Is there anything I can do? I feel like the payments have all been a con.

If the policy didn't cover death, then no.

The payments weren't a con, but the policy only covered what it covered.

Life cover and accident, sickness and unemployment cover would usually be provided by two separate plans by different providers. A single plan solution would be very rare.

    Sorry to hear that.
If you are dissatisfied by their response, you still have a right to complain. But it's unlikely they're going to uphold the complaint in your favour if you weren't named on the policy and assume you weren't there when the policy was sold. So you can't say what was or wasn't said at time of sale.
Lloyd's were particularly bad around this time for selling anything they could to anyone they could, in my opinion!

They're not going to uphold a complaint, period, on the basis OP wrongly thought an MPPI policy was life insurance. OP "knows" he took it out thinking it was life insurance yet what evidence is there? All the paperwork from 20 years ago would clearly state what it covered and that it was MPPI not life insurance. OP would do better checking if there was life insurance taken out rather than wasting time on a complaint that they didn't read the paperwork.
Also, if Lloyds were so bad about selling anything they could, why was there no life insurance instead of just the (very useful) MPPI policy?

How are you going to evidence this "understanding"? Was there some sort of advice in writing along those lines?

    For clarity:

A   Mortgage Protection Policy is a life assurance policy

A   Mortgage Payment Protection  Policy insures income.

    People  often confuse the two.

Lloyds have never retailed an insurance product that combines MPPI with life assurance.   With a 20 year timescale you are talking about going back to the days of Black Horse Life being the provider of life assurance and Pinnacle covering MPPI.
So, if there was life assurance, there would be a direct debit to Black Horse Life in the early days which was later rebranded to Lloyds TSB Life and then Scottish Widows.

The term mortgage protection is not one that identifies a specific type of policy.  It is a marketing name used by multiple types of insurance that could be used with a mortgage.

I feel like the payments have all been a con.
If you buy a tin of baked beans do you find it a con when you open it up and find there are baked beans inside?

Lloyds had a good reputation up to around 98/99 in respect of their salesforce. It was graded management level before then and didn't have many issues.  However, after that period they started getting all their general staff to sell insurances and that is when the reputation and quality fell away.
