Heads up, compers! In order to investigate a technical issue, we've had to move some of the older threads from Game Over into a new category called 'Game Over Archives'. It'll be comps from before 2017, so shouldn't have too much impact on your day-to-day Forum experience. Thanks for your patience!

Neighbouring spoof calls

I'm trying to work out if it came from a competition I entered, to be honest it could be from a competition that I entered years ago as I've been comping for awhile.
But I usually don't enter my phone number on competitions that don't require it and only usually enter competitions that I know are genuine if it requires a phone number.

I've been getting neighbouring spoof calls from my phone around 2-3 a day.
Neighbouring spoof calls are numbers that have the same first numbers as your own number but the last 4 digits are usually different.
I've read that if you answer them you can be flooded with more as they are aware that your number is live, so I obviously don't want to answer it, but I do want to answer it to ask them not to call anymore, as sometimes that works with most companies.
I very rarely get any sale or scam calls and if I do from the same number, I can block it, but these numbers are usually different 4 digit numbers at the end, so I can't keep blocking them. I'm registered with the Telephone Preference service already.

I was just wondering if anyone else was having the same issue?
If anyone had any advice for me?
I'm getting ready to change my phone number but don't want it to happen again.
Thank you to everyone who posts competitions and good luck to everyone who enters.

Hi Ms Dee. There are many random SCAM calls being made, nationally I believe, pretending to be from the National Crime Agency (or similar) which start by saying your National Insurance number has been compromised and they want you tp press 1 on your phone to deal with this. Do not do this, just hang up. I have had two calls over the last three weeks. Both answered but swiftly terminated. You should be ok to answer as long as you then just terminate once you have heard the message. Hope this helps.

I had this this morning, I didn't notice the number was the same as mine apart from the last 4 digits until after I had hung up!  It was an Indian Lady, said she was calling from "The Carphone Warehouse company" It was a bad line and i was struggling with her accent but she was talking about upgrading my phone?? I'm not due an upgrade until next year though so told her I'm not interested and hung up...  not sure if it genuinely was Carphone warehouse or not (I am actually with them)

I've had four so far the last one telling me my NINO had been compromised and to press one to avoid any prosecutions, the others very much the same but all for different agencies, how do these people sleep at night! Thanks for posting this as I am sure they must be pestering a lot of people.

I get the occasional ones saying they're from the HMRC and I'm being arrested for tax fraud or saying my Nat Ins number has been compromised.  I just hang straight up.

Haven't had one of those car accident ones for a while, thinking about it!
