is there any benefit of paying back child tax benefits back via tax code rather than in self

hi all,  I have to pay back the child benefit tax through my self assessment as im over the the 50K limit (wife doesnt work)  i just wondered the reason of paying the child benefit tax through the tax rather than through the self assessment is there any benefits of doing either?

  • It is personal preference really.

Whatever happens you still need to do a Self Assessment return.

I'm assuming you mean pay some extra tax provisionally during the tax year in question, rather than the option to have a Self Assessment underpayment collected via your tax code of a later tax year?

OK i had a issue the other day after submitting my self assessment where HMRC changed my tax code to incorporate the child tax benefit and they blame a system error for doing that but this month im down nearly £500 they have reverted it for next month and given me a new tax code.
Im holding on for HRMC again as i type this as im trying to work out what my tax code will be in april.  I know my wage and i know what taxable benefits i get.   My wage from April i will reduce and pay more into my pension before tax,  so my wage will go down.  can i assume my tax code will be 1250L when entering into the salary/tax calculators.
  • If you have taxable benefits then your code is unlikely to be 1250L.

I think you can probably see your tax code (for next tax year) on your Personal Tax Account.
