Hi All
I have received mail from HMRC to file my returns for FY 2019-2020.
I was employed on PAYE in 2019 and left my job in Aug 2019, and earned Apr-Aug (pro-rated salary for Aug) I have not had any job since then.
My ex-company hasn't sent me any documents, what should I demand of them? I guess P45, please confirm. Also is there anything else needed?
On Self assessment form on gov.uk, I found that my company paid me around £13000 and my tax deducted was £1800 approx. When I see my P60/ P45 I will know more, I guess.
Since my total earning for 2019-2020 was just £13000, I think I am eligible for tax refund. Am I right here?
How do I apply for refund?
Anything else, I should be doing?

Thank you very much for your help.

  • A P45 probably isn't necessary.

But why didn't you get one when you left their employment?

Forget what gov.uk says for a minute, do you think the £13,000 pay and £1,800 tax are correct?

From what you have posted you would potentially be due £1,700 back.

But is there anything you aren't telling us?

You have given no reason at all why you would need to complete a Self Assessment return.  Do you have large amounts of interest or dividend income?  Did you start being self employed in 2019:20?

They are supposed to have issued a P45 when your employment ended. As you were no longer employed by them at the end of the tax year you will not get a P60 from them.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Without P45 or equivalent document, how do I verify the information holds about me?

I was going through a personal tragedy when I left my job. I signed everything they gave me, asked me to and didn't know they were supposed to give me a tax document. Later i thought that they will send it to me.

well no, I think the tax was deducted assuming I will earn throughout the year. With PSA of £12500, I think I am obligated to pay tax on £500 @ 20% rate so approx £100. So yes, I surmise Im due a refund of £1700

@Dazed_and_C0nfused Please ask anything that you think will be relevant. When I came to UK, my colleague told me that you have to file a return, which is fairly common in my home country. So I did file return. But the gov.uk page asked if I am required to go for self-assessment, I guess based on my immigration status I was required to file. I had always been on PAYE, and first-year there was no tax to pay, next year I had to pay £1.2 as tax! I took the questionnaire again yesterday, and according to it I m not required to file self-assessment. But how do I apply for tax refund if I do not file for return? I do not have ANY income - rental or interest or dividend or any other kind for 2019-2020. Im not employed or self-employed.
  • If you have been asked to file a return then you are required to.  It wasn't clear why you would have been asked but that seems to be down to your action.

The quickest way (by far) to get a refund is to complete the return.

In the absence of a P45 you can check your payslips to see if the pay and tax deductions pre entered on your return are correct.  They probably are but you are responsible for filing an accurate return.
  • Sure thanks. I will contact my company to get P45 too, just to be sure. If possible can you or anyone else direct me to a relevant process document to get a refund from gov.uk? Am I eligible for interest on the amount paid in Apr-Aug 2019? I am drawing this from tax laws in my birth country.

    You cannot claim a refund.

You complete the Self Assessment return and any tax refund due is based on that.

Interest will be paid on anything repaid after 31 January 2021.  Rate was 0.5%/year I think.
  • Hi All,
    A happy update.
It was very stressful to think that I had to apply for a refund and the fear of what if I make a mistake. Well, I have to admit, it is the most user-friendly income tax website and was a pleasant surprise.
I somehow stumbled on the gov.uk webpage for applying for a refund and entered basic details from P45.
After finishing with that I realised, I still have to file my return, since HMRC asked me to. So I filed it in the last week of January. Numerous questions, but easy to comprehend, all marked 'No' for an answer. After clicking 'Submit' I smiled to myself, and thought, well that wasn't difficult at all! Infact I self doubted for a moment, that it was way too easy.
Anyway, my refund of little under £1700 credited to my account in the first week of February. :)
