Do I have to do Self Assessment now even though I'm PAYE?

Hi,
I have tried to google and search though the forums for an answer to this and have come up blank, and even the accounts department at work aren't sure but I'm hoping it's a quick easy answer for someone on here!

I was advsied to start filling in self assessment for tax years ending in 2021 as my wages his a certain threshold and I started doing "business miles", so I registered for self assesment as soon as I was told last spring/summer. Now were coming up to the deadline for tax year ending in 2020, which I don't really need to do one for from my point of view.

My question is, now that I am registered for self assessement, am I obliged to do one for this year even though I'm PAYE or can I safely just let this one pass by and start next year?

Thanks in advance for any help

Did you register using form SA1? If so, which question did you answer yes to, if any, and from what date?

Have you actually been sent a return or notice to file a return for 2019:20?

What threshold are you referring to?

Don't forget these are your tax affairs, not your payroll departments.

Millions who are on PAYE probably need to file a return, it is quite normal for a lot of people.
  • Thanks - I can't rememeber how I registered or what I ticked to be honest, it was a while ago I just googled it and filled in stuff on-line. (I did make sure it was the proper government portal)
I haven't been sent a return or notice to file though.
My pay has gone over 50k, so I was told it's best to do one for a few reasons such as the business milage and child tax allowance (not sure that's the prople name?)

Never a good idea to just 'fill stuff in online' without keeping a record of what you actually declared...
Once your net adjusted income goes over £50k, you may be liable to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge, which is explained here:
    https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-charge
This is assessed at year end, and collected separately from PAYE, so you are required to register for self assessment, and complete an annual return.
This will only apply if your income exceeded the threshold in tax year 19/20, which is not clear from your post. If it only did so in tax year 20/21, then the return is not due for another year.
If it's the former, then you have 6 days left to file.

No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Brilliant thanks, sorry I wasn't clear but only exceeded the threshold in the 20/21 tax year so I think I have the answer I needed

Hi, Is the figure used to establish if you are over the £50,000 from your 'Taxable income'  ? On my payslip I have 'Taxable income' and 'Niable income' they are different. On my gov.uk gateway, on my PAYE for this year all i see is the 'taxable income' figure.
