Well done, glad you got is sorted at a price you considered reasonable - would you care to share the £££, or not!  :D  ;)

Well, it was less than half the cost of a "new" refurbished machine with an equivalent 480GB SSD.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Am I also right in thinking that the only reason to password protect the laptop at log-in is to prevent casual reading from other household members or nosy family???

Obviously as the professional, with the right software, can just get into your hard drive anyway!!

Looks like that includes a reasonable charge for data recovery.  Don't think you can complain about that - some will charge much more.  Also good to know a good local computer shop.

There are other ways if you really want to prevent entry; like encrypting the disk, so that even if someone removed the HDD and placed it in a caddy, they would not be able to access the content.
