Root canal fail?

Looking for advice. 4 days ago I had a root canal treatment on my front tooth ( NHS). The dentist had already done a RCT on another mollar tooth the previous month which went fine. In the middle of the root canal I was told she couldn't complete it as they needed a different tool which they didn't have. She filled the tooth, and has referred me to a specialist with a 2-3 month waiting list, otherwise private (which I can't afford). Its been 4 days and It's formed an abscess with a swollen cheek,. Was very extremely painful first few days now its bearable. I went back to see them, they have given me antibiotics. My question is really, is this normal? Surely waiting 2-3 months for a specialist to finish the root canal job is going to cause more damage?   I'm mainly angry at them starting this without finishing it, and by researching online it sounds as if I will have a lower chance of success for the root canal. It's on my front tooth by the way, so I'm concerned about this.

No painkillers are helping at all. Any advice what I should do? Or experience in this?

Thanks

  • Even in specialist hands the success rate for root treatments is not 100% . The success rate varies on many factors and sometimes you can only see a problem after starting a root treatment as the anatomy of a canal can be very complex.
I'm amazed that they have managed to get you a NHS specialist for root canals, it's virtually unheard of in the vast majority of the U.K.
They have done the right thing they attempted it ,as a front tooth is normally relatively straight forward , stopped when they came across a problem , informed you and referred on.
As to clinical advice you need to be asking your dentist about that.

It may be no consolation right now, but when the antibiotics kick in the pain will lessen.

And it's likely that no dentist or oral surgeon would undertake any work until any infection was cleared up anyway.
