Community care worker mileage rebate

Options
Hi guys,
I need some advice. I work as a community care worker and my organisation give me 11p per mile in my wages but I've been told that the government have set the amount due at 45p per mile. Is it true that, if I can provide proof of the miles I have travelled, that I can claim the difference back from hmrc and if so how do I do this? Do I need to go through a third party or can I claim myself?

Many thanks in advance

You can't claim the difference between 45p and 11p but you can claim the tax on the difference so effectively get 6.8p per mile off your tax.

  • As molerat has explained you only get tax relief on the difference, which if you pay sufficient basic rate tax will be worth 6.8p/mile.

So if there is any chance you can persuade your employer to pay a few pence more it would be far better financially for you than claiming tax relief.

And you could still claim tax relief on the difference between the approved rate and any enhanced rate paid by the employer (assuming it is less than 45p/mile).
