Self Assessment Email

Hi,
After some advice please.
I usually do a self-assessment around this time of year and HMRC are sending me emails chasing that up.  They state on their email:
"You’ll still need to submit a return even if you don’t owe any tax."
The last tax year I earned under £1,000 from self-employed work (I was on PAYE in my main job) so by completing the attached
"If you think you are no longer required to complete an SA return, you can Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return."
That says:

You do not need to send a Self Assessment tax return

Based on your answers, you do not need to send a return for 2019 to 2020.

I am correct in thinking no SA is required for earnings under £1,000

Thanks,
David

  • You are looking at this from the wrong perspective.

Have you been sent a 2019:29 tax return or notice to file a tax return for 2019:20?

obviously you are already on the system as you are receiving reminders. Completion of that webpage does not override your requirement to submit 19/20 this late in the day, did you not read the second sentence?
"The tool will not send your details to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)"

You must send 19/20 or you will get an automatic non submission penalty irrespective of the fact you (may) have zero tax to pay.

Then make sure you get off SA for future years

OK thanks, yeah I will get it done today, shouldn't take long.  Well, it wouldn't if the system was half way user friendly.
