Self-Assessment Tax Return - £5.5k tax bill...

  • Possibly, though that would only kick the can down the road to next year, and fingers crossed, there'll be next year's bonus to take into account then (though COVID may have kicked that into touch!). Of course for this year's tax return the sums have already been paid so that can't be changed.

As your bonus is paid in April, submit your tax return in April and then you will know what you need to pay straight away. I do my self assessment every April and normally pay in May, I know some people think that makes me mad, but it is not my money, so I would rather get it sorted and paid than dragging out the inevitable.
