Self assessment return shows I owe more tax than I was expecting?

  • You seem to be placing far too much reliance on your employer.

This is your tax code and and your Self Assessment liability.

You may have provisionally received some Personal Allowance and not actually be due any whatsoever.  That is why the bill is more than you assumed.

Understood. So my company has been paying my income tax based on the tax code it was given, which included a personal allowance, however, now I have filled in my tax return, the system recognises that I am not entitled to a PA, so has adjusted the tax accordingly, is that right? If it is, that's disappointing from HMRC as my salary hasn't actually changed in the last few years, so they should have known I wasn't going to get a personal allowance. But the bottom line sounds like the calculation is correct on the self assessment calculation  :(

Presumably over £125k then? You have summed it up perfectly. As I said, it may be too late to avoid it happening this year, with eleven weeks left. No doubt you will monitor your codes henceforth.

Tax coding can be found on your online HMRC tax account, as can your tax paid through your employer as it’s all linked up now and typically HMRC automatically updates your tax code as you go along. Changes I’ve seen this year include my p11d benefits being taxed directly through payroll. Try using the pay calc on this site and see if figures match

Yes, looking at my latest payslip my tax code is currently 1177T, so it looks like they're paying tax as if I have £11,770 personal allowance again. Good grief. So next year, I'm guessing, I will be in the same situation? You're right, I'll need to watch out for this year's tax code and try to get it corrected when they notify me.

a T suffix on your code means HMRC knows the code needs to be reviewed and therefore is likely to need to be changed.
That review can happen once they have your SA to provide the info to allow the calculation of what it should change to.
