Voluntary national insurance.

I am in full time employment ( p.a.y.e. ) so pay national insurance. I have the 35 years of service ( and plenty more left to do) for a full state pension when I retire but I also own a flat that I rent out. I receive £3600 in rent which is under the £6000+ in which you have to pay N.I. on rental income but when doing my self assessment tax returns for the flat they are asking if I would like to pay voluntary N.I. As far as I can ascertain I will receive my full state pension ( via my job ) but I have a nagging doubt that they will take my rent ernings in to account and state that I have not paid enough N.I. for my total income and so may not get a full state pension. ( I have no idea if that is how it works )
Can anyone enlighten me on the facts before I go the hassle of getting intouch with the tax man.
Thank you.

You would only want to pay voluntary class 2 if you were not being credited with NI from elsewhere. As you are paying class 1 through employment there is no need to pay voluntary class 2. NI is paid per employment and as being a landlord is not your main employment NI is not payable on those profits. In fact you are not entitled to pay the lower cost class 2 voluntary contributions even if you needed the credits as being a single property landlord is not considered self employment, you would have to pay the more expensive class 3.
