Mortgage Deeds

Hi I have the original deeds to my house. I was sent them back in the late 1990’s by my mortgage lender at the time.  I am now selling this property. My colleague have told me that I can’t have the original deeds as I have a mortgage on the property , but I do have them. Should I give them to the new owner .?

For property recorded on the Land Registry most lenders stopped holding the deeds some time ago and that is probably why your lender returned them to you.
I'd have a look through the packet you received and remove anything relating to you personally and then give the rest to your solicitor to pass on to the buyer on completion, or just leave them in the house when you move out...
It can be handy to have original copies of plans marking boundaries and who is responsible for their upkeep as well as details of the covenants (if any).

I would send on to your solicitor and they can work out if there is anything useful in there.

Here’s what we would tell the new owner if they asked us where the ‘deeds’ were
