Retirement age

Hi..I am 63 years old and been employed by my current employer for 10 years..just read through my contract and note that it states I will be due to retire in the month of my 65th birthday.question is will I be able to claim any benefit for the year until my pension becomes payable on my 66th birthday?

    You don’t have to retire on your 65th birthday if you don’t want to. That will be an old contract before the law changed.  Unsure about your benefit question but I hope you didn’t mind me pointing out this!

    You don't have to retire, just work till your pension is due. Your cobpnyptract will have probably written before all these new rules  about age discrimination and chaos of pension date came about.

    Do you mean you have a defined benefit (final salary) pension that you can take from the age of 65? It is not uncommon to have a company pension that will pay out at 65 (or even 60 for some lucky people) even though state pension age has risen to 66 or 67.
    Do you want to retire at 65 or did you want to work on until 66 (or longer)?

    Indeed - written a LONG time ago, because the law changed much more than 10 years ago!

    Your employer can't make you retire when you hit 65. If you choose to do so, it will be classed by DWP as a voluntary resignation and will certainly impact on any claim for benefits.
