tax self assessment query

I've used the HMRC online form service to ask a question about whether or not I need to do a self assessment return . I submitted it a month ago and haven't had a reply from HMRC . If they don't get back to me before the deadline ,will I get fined if I don't do a return and they come back to say one is needed?

Have you been issued with a return?
If not you cannot be fined for late filing of something you haven't been asked to file.0 -
No I haven't heard anything back so don't know if I need to file a return or not . Logic woud say that if they dont answer my query in time I cant be blamed for not filing on time...but with HMRC who knows....0

If you do need to file a return then you will be given 3 months to complete it from when HMRC notify you before late filing penalties are charged.0
