Child Benefit Self Assessment Help

Hi,
I posted in the Benefits & Tax Credits thread but was advised to post here instead.

Wondering if anyone can give me some advice. We have to complete the child benefit tax charge calculator to see if we were overpaid for the tax year 2019/2020 based on my partner's salary for that year. His salary increased that year in the September from £45k to £48k. We're trying to figure out what the correct amount would be for the first question on the calculator of 'what was your salary for that year?'. Would we just work out the average for the year, would that be accepted by HMRC? Just want to make sure they don't think we're inputting anything incorrectly.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Why aren't you using his P60?
  • We were - but his P60 just has his 'Total amount for the year' which includes his bonuses. The child benefit calculator is asking for his salary and bonuses in separate fields, so we just weren't sure how to go about interring in the correct salary figure.
  • Why not try the P60 figure in salary box and £0 in bonuses?
  • Yeah I guess we could? I just didn't want us to make an error by inputting the wrong figures, especially since it's asking for us to input those figures separately. I was also worried in case it would affect our current child benefit payment as although his bonus for the last financial year has put us over the £50k bracket marginally - we are both currently furloughed and therefore taking home far less compared to the last financial year.

I cannot think why there needs to be a separation of salary and bonus, but all you need to do is identify the bonus paid in the year to 5 April 2020, and deduct that from the P60 figure for 2019/20 to give you the salary figure.

It's only a calculator, the bonus box actually says other employment income e.g. bonuses.
Just put the full amount from P60 into the salary box and £0 in the other box.
