Pay

Hi,
My manager inputs hours and goes to wherever.  Employed in an organisation north of 20k employees.
My manager can access and print my payslip.  I am not happy he has access to my data and therefore wish to revoke his eye setting on it.  Another employee has raised this so I dare say in the office there will be more- just I am the only one to step forward and deal with it.
There is no reason why he should see my taxcode- therefore tax deductions and how much I am putting into my pension.   Frankly, I am annoyed when his comment he can just print it off.
So as I think it goes to a central place and payslip goes onto the company portal- I can't see why he needs to lawfully see it nor reason to block my application without his knowledge from seeing it.
This normal for line managers being able to print off payslips? Never had this.  Had I need to show it for them to explain- not access to print off at will and frankly read information nothing to do with them!

Deal with what, exactly? There's nothing unlawful or unusual about this.

Hes your manager. Why is it an issue for him being involved in your pay? Seems pretty standard.

Being involved/knowing gross pay is normal but for a line manager to have access to the details of a payslip is not.
The OP mentioned tax code and pension contributions but could have been concerned about attachment of earnings deductions and the latter in particular is not the business of the line manager.  I can see why some people would object to a manager having such information.

I have revoked permission for this data-payslip.  Gave them two months to stop it or I raise a complaint with an avenue to Information Commissioner.  Read up on their website- neer realised how much regulation there is!
Parents agree line manager shouldn't be able to just pull it up and my dad said printing off the company will be questioning this.  Micromanagement think the term is.

Once they write to confirm will show others they can indeed stop such an invasion on privacy.

Quite normal where I work payroll produced the pay slips and line manager prints them and distributes to team members

I think you are majorly over reacting

I've never heard of this either, to be honest. But then everywhere I've worked has had a separate HR department with their own finance section who dealt with salary slips and payments in complete confidence.

You can always contact the ICO to find out what your rights are, they have a phone line and also live chat as well as web forms where you can register a complaint.  Or you can contact Acas for advice before jumping in with both feet.

However, taking the action you have mentioned will not endear you to management.

Do you know he is printing it off 'at will'? Or is he just printing it off to give to you for pay day?
If you do know hrs printing it off after giving you your copy, I would want to know why. If his answer - as I think you are saying - is 'because I can', I would be taking this up with his manager.
It seems a very backward way to do it, and must take up loads of managers (if you have 20k employees) time.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • ICO is of the opinion he should not be able to view all the information that is on a payslip and indeed I can stop it and ask why this is happening.  Escalate to them where a look at any breaching of data information may be looked at it.

As for printing them.   There should be a trace of access to my 'file' and printing off-trail.  If it's just a case of record up/print. Then there are serious concerns about either that manager or overall handling.  But I am not overreacting as somebody above said as I might just might have picked up on something sinister.

So to email dept that deals with subject access etc request asking basis.   If they fail to reply- ICO will go to them if I raise a complaint.  But they are surprised this manager can just get a payslip and print it off.  Few concerns- for me it's privacy.
