Employee and "self employed"

- Hi,I am currently in full time employment but am considering reducing my hours to half a week and work the other half with my dad who runs his own business. The industry is completely different to my regular job, and I don't anticipate any push back from my employer. My issue holding me back is a lack of understanding regarding tax.My dad does not want to employ anybody as he does not want to deal with providing a pension or manage payroll etc. Therefore I am looking at options to work with him but pay my own tax/NI. If I was to become a contractor and send him weekly/monthly invoices, would that be the best way to proceed? Would this be allowable if I am still employed half the week in my current job? He would be the only person I would be invoicing, would this be acceptable or would HMRC consider me an employee of his?I’m not looking to pay minimal tax or find a loop hole or anything, just looking to split my career and pay the rightful tax/NI I owe. Any help or advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Whose idea was it that you work with your father? His or yours?RicFlair said:- Hi,I am currently in full time employment but am considering reducing my hours to half a week and work the other half with my dad who runs his own business. What sort of work would you be doing? Anything like the work you are doing in your current job?0 -
Hey. My idea to work with him as I'm looking for a bit of variety from my current job. The two jobs are not related at all, completely different sectors.

Have you discussed or considered starting a partnership?0

As I say I'm a bit clueless at the moment on the self employed side of things. Would starting a partnership be more beneficial than other routes?

Without knowing the ins and outs of the existing business it is impossible for anyone to know what the best (and legitimate) option would be.
Maybe this is a situation where a meeting with a reputable local accountant would be worthwhile?0
