Tax relief on new computer.

I am trying to find out if I can claim tax relief for a new computer. I am now working from home and need a new computer to do my work. I am a teacher and require the computer to do live lessons with students. My school does not provide us with computers or reimburse us for them. The computer I currently use is over 7 years old and is no longer suitable.
So will I be able to claim tax relief for the purchase of a new computer. The rest of my household have iPads and rarely use the computer. It’s main purpose will be for work. I would be willing to claim on a % of the cost vs the full cost if that makes it more legitimate.

  • If you genuinely needed it as it was necessary for you do your work your employer would surely provide it.

check it for yourself here: "buying other equipment"
Claim tax relief for your job expenses: Buying other equipment - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

the answer will be no as you are not self-employed so cannot claim "annual investment allowance". For an employee, the expectation is the employer has a duty to provide the equipment required to do the job, even when "home based". If they don't, tough.

The above link is for employees, not self employed. It is possible for employees to claim AIA, but only in the very restricted circumstances outlined in the link.
  • How does your employer expect you to perform your duties from home without supplying the necessary equipment?

I'd suggest to them they need to provide what's needed or allocate you with different duties.

The OP has not specifically said, but is a Teacher and in the absence of information to the contrary I had taken it that they are an employee.
  • Yes sadly there is very little you can claim as an employee as your employer is expected to provide everything you need, and they then get the tax relief.

My response was to the post I quoted, which already assumed that OP was an employee, but then went on to say that an employee cannot claim AIA, which is not correct (but extremely difficult to achieve). If OP is self employed, it is a lot easier.
