Changing name in Scotland

Options
I think it’s time I finally sorted this out but I have been round the houses in the past and got nowhere. I got married abroad in May 2019 although husband and I are both Scottish. To be honest I hadn’t 100% thought the whole name change thing through, however, I have now decided that I would like to keep my maiden name in some capacity. So for example if my maiden name was Ellie Jones, and my married name is Ellie Smith (this is what is on my foreign marriage certificate), is there anything I need to do in order to make my name full name Ellie Jones Smith?

I haven’t updated my name anywhere officially yet so my bank accounts, passport and driving licence are all still in my maiden name but I’m not sure if I need something official to simply add my married surname onto my full name?

  • Well in that case you aren't taking his name, you're taking a variation of his surname, so it'll have to be done by deed poll. Lots online about how this works. Unless you mean you will put your current surname as your middle name and take his surname. Even in that case you'd need to use deed poll to change your middle name so you may as well use it to do both at the same time.
