When I installed a SSD to replace my old HDD in the lappy, I used Acronis True Image and had no trouble at all and it was free at least I think it was, it may have come with the SSD!0

Nothing wrong with Acronis or Macrium. They are probably equally the best free backup/clone programs out there for most users. They would both have a problem with a corrupt hard drive that needs sorting first!Hope your pc finishes before next year!Backups also retain settings etc and get you up and running quickly (provided you have made recent backups!!).As an example I has the dreaded blue screen of death failure the other day. Recover from backup and within an hour had working pc, All programs, all settings stored (encrypted) passwords, recent history etc etc in front of me. Happiness!0

Ok i followed debits advice:Clicking the temperature shows a 50c trigger.Interesting about this drive. It's barely used at all really (the laptop). My desktop PC is used daily and the drives in here have been used for years with many writes, deletes and more writes and they show as Good. But anyway, it's irrelevant what another drive is. Just sparked my curiosity that's all. What matters is this drive. So question is what now?Top and bottom is I want this on a SSD. I have programs i want set up on that drive, I have the Lenovo software that came with that laptop set up on that drive and I have Windows auto-activated with that drive. So how do i get it so it will clone all of it to a new drive now?0

Ran check disk from within Computer by right clicking C and selecting properties.I'm unable to repair from within windows either via that way or via cmd prompt. Says i have to do that on a restart - did that and the drive still shows as caution. This was what just a scan returned:0

Yeah the other programs aren't really an issue. The Lenovo suite - is it not beneficial in any way? I know it has a System Update thing with it.Also, i remember from XP days retail and OEM versions of a Windows version and a key for 1 doesn't work on the disc of another - something to that effect.I have Windows 7 64 bit pro on the laptop. There's only 1 version of that is there? So if i go on to the Windows website and download the .iso for that then the key that's on the laptop will work?0

I'd just let MR try to clone again now the check says ok.If you get the error again follow the instruction on the link I gave to set ignore error. You have absolutely nothing to loose (apart from a bit of time!) doing that...then see if it reports clone ok and try it in your laptop.0

Glad that you're ever checking produced no errors however as you probably know this is just a quick check of the structure of the disk and although it confirms you don't have an error which would prevent you doing a clone it has not completely checked the disk
in particular what it has not done is a read of every sector to see if you are getting any read errors
for that you need a more extensive hard drive checking tool - easy enough to Google hdd disk checking tools - there are several free ones out there
see what takes your fancy but basically you need one that will take quite a lot of time to run and will do an extended surface test to read each sector in turn and check if you get a read error anywhere.
I have not used macrium myself but I believe it contains an option under edit defaults -advanced to ignore bad sectors you could try imaging it with this0 -
I have tried downloading the Windows 7 iso from the Microsoft website but when I enter the key from under the battery on the laptop it gives me an error saying it was preloaded on to the laptop. Contact I think the manufacturer it said. Someone anyway.
Which if its Lenovo then I don't hold out much hope for a word back because they still haven't been bothered to tell me how I can buy a genuine battery as all I see is imitations online.0 -
Why do you want that iso? What indication do you have that it is a Windows sector that caused the error? Is above may well be right. Why not do a full disk test see https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/how-to-use-seatools-for-windows-202435en/ ?You could of course just start from scratch on your SSD as if it were a new build and format and Install windows you would then need to install your other programs too. I would not then use win 7 for that method owing to it's age! You would still be left with a potentially duff drive that has data on it or is no use for backups. Best fix it first?
