Hi all, well OH has decided none of the current lurking car mats can be spared as they all have some life left in them so back to the drawing board on that idea, might just have to resume trawling the internet to find some to buy. I looked at Celtic and co and they do look nice, just wondering how washable they are, it says they are but wondering if anyone has any experience of doing this with theirs. For many years I was in the bare foot brigade until I was seriously told off by the chiropodist after getting 3 things stuck in my foot, a splinter from some wood, a piece of glass, tiny but caused a problem and a piece of dried up plant on the beach so now I try to remember to always wear something on my feet, she was scarier than my Mum
Cherryfudge you made me laugh with your comment about forgetting clothes, today I sorted out my bag of divorced socks, I keep it in the bottom of the wardrobe and any odd socks that are left after sorting the washing go in it. Realising it hadn't been done for a good while I set to and have now got 23 remarried pairs of socks!!!! Too many to actually fit in my sock draw. Resorted and even after recycling some to the duster box I have had to put some in another bag in the wardrobeI made the decision to remove the new and nearly new and concentrate on wearing out the older ones and those that had been bought for me but I'm not keen on, those ones that seem to last decades
.
Laura I know you always make your jumpers by knitting and then cutting them, and very lovely they are too, but it totally blows my mind to think of doing something like that. Maybe when we have finished the spring clean and can sit down for a cup of tea you can show me how it works
Freezing here too and doing its best to snow.9 -
Make that 25 pairs of socks!!! Just changed the duvet cover and found 2 socks inside the clean one so paired them up straight away lol9

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with an Odd-Sock-Box sort of thing! When the boys were still at home, it was a nightmare trying to keep socks sorted & paired, never mind work out who they belonged to; it's more manageable now with just the 4 of us (though that's going back to 5 shortly) so we have an Odd-Sock-Box on a shelf in the utitlity room & people can sort their own socks out from there if they've got separated in the wash.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)7

We don't pair most of our socks. Hubby has black socks and white socks. I have a few that are colorful, but I normally don't wear matching socks anyway (I match types - not a complete barbarian!). Honestly, if I'm wearing boots, I steal his socks anyway.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.8

To be honest, I’ve never washed my Celtic slippers. They’ve never needed it. They don’t get smelly. About half the time, I’m wearing them with socks anyway.
Having said that, I have a couple of pairs of sheepskin gloves - not Celtic - and I have washed those. One pair, I found in a puddle in the street, sopping wet and covered in dirt. The other pair are Ugg and had a lot of loose black dye, which kept turning my nails black. I soaked them in warm water and wool wash for about 10 minutes, gently rolled them in a towel to get the water out and then dried them flat by a radiator.

It's one of quite a few things My Intended and I always thought was "just me" - he has never had a problem losing socks in the wash and neither have I. We're not sure why we've each never lost socks, because we don't really know why other people do.
The only thing I can think of is that when I empty the washing machine afterwards I turn the drum a complete revolution sweeping my arm round inside to find any strays.... hang on, I'll just askOooh, that was interesting - he takes the wet laundry out one thing at a time. I queried, what literally? and he says yes. Apparently he doesn't think it takes a long time...
Anyway, we know we're anomalies
My handknitted socks I do in a wool wash - just the cold-water 19-minute 1400rpm 'rinse' cycle with no detergent.2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

It might be your machine that's the anomaly, Laura. Or maybe your very excellent hand-knitted socks? A friend's husband is High Up in our local water company & has told me that they fish approximately 1,500 socks out at the treatment works every week; apparently they slide very easily between the drum of your machine & the seal when wet, and can pass through an unblocked pump without much trouble too. So washing machines do sometimes quite literally eat socks...Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)6

Haha - I knew it! So there really IS a Sock Monster in the machine, I’ve always believed that. Can I ask for some advice please? A friend has asked me to repair a stuffed toy. It’s a rather lovely patchwork cat, made about 40+ years ago. Some of the patches have disintegrated, and it’s a bit grubby (sorry, ‘well loved’). I realised very quickly that replacing the patches with new fabric, even old ‘new’ fabric, wouldn’t work because it would put a strain on the other patches. Instead I’ve adopted a sort of darning approach, I’d like to say it’s in line with the Japanese technique of visible mending but not quite that sophisticated! However I’d like to clean it up very gently- what would you use? I’ve tried just water but I think it needs some sort of soap or cleaning agent.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.6

We have a lost sock bag, which can be zipped closed to prevent any from escaping 😂
I also have a bag in my wardrobe with my excess socks. I ended up with an excess of socks when ds had a huge growth spurt and outgrew my size. In the drawer, I have older and tattier pairs, as they wear out they are demoted to cleaning/dusting rags and replaced with pairs from my wardrobe.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

Re: washing sheepskin slippers for quite a few years I bought and used the Emu ones (before they became too expensive and lesser quality) now I buy Aldi one, I wash them occasionally in wool wash liquid on the shortest, coolest programme on my machine, perhaps once in about 18 months - I am known for pottering about outside in them! The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.
