@CAFCGirl, yes you will notice that people in the north do greet you even if they don't know you. I grew up in kent and I always say people there never talked to strangers, even if you sit opposite to them on the daily commute every day for years, whereas you can get someone's life story at the bus stop in Liverpool, one of the things I love about Liverpool

On the moth front on further investigation I have found damage to 2 wool scarves, 1 from the 1965 FA Cup final gifted to me when a friend was clearing her garage. I now suspect this is the source of the problem, but hey ho you live and learn.7 -
I tried YNAB and got overwhelmed. I can balance our spreadsheet against the bank account and see how the rest of the year is going, so it works well for us until I forget that the insurance for the camper is due July 7. I don’t know why they can’t just lump it in with everything else that’s monthly. That might actually be what spurs me to look for a cheaper provider!PollyWollyDoodle said:@TwibbleDee I believe you can download a free trial of YNAB. It copes very well with my erratic income, I get paid as and when! Basically you don’t enter money until you actually have it, and once you have it you make sure it’s allocated somewhere – one of the straplines is “give every dollar a job”. It’s not for everyone I agree, but it works really well for me.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.6 -
I smile at everybody and say hi or How’re you doing to half of them. I end up talking to strangers a LOT. Hubby jokes that if he can’t find me in a store, he can just wait a minute and listen and he’ll hear me laughing with someone.
….yeah, I’m going to have culture shock whenever we start traveling again.

Too true. I remember going to work in Birmingham for a couple of weeks in 2001 and being startled that strangers smiled at me and said hello. Mind you, I spent years wondering why visitors to London always asked me for directions. Eventually, I worked out that it was because Londoners don’t routinely look strangers in the face, whereas as an Australian, I do.On the moth front on further investigation I have found damage to 2 wool scarves, 1 from the 1965 FA Cup final gifted to me when a friend was clearing her garage. Damn! So sorry to hear that it’s the 1965 FA Cup Final scarf that is the source of the problem, @Liverpool_Anne. I know how valuable it will be to you, as a fan.
(DH’s big boss is a Chelsea fan and gave me the scarf from the goody bag from this year’s Champion’s League Final. Very sweet of him.)

@PipneyJane, yes it's been quarantined in a sealed plastic bag until the spray arrives and while I probably can't repair it I will be able to stabilise it and hopefully prevent further unravelling damage.5

As a native-born Britisher, I find that Americans, Australians and New Zealanders are subconsciously interpreted as friendly by the British because culturally you are much more 'open' in allowing feelings to show. Of course it could just be that those people brave enough to cross the world and talk to the people at the other side actually ARE more likely to be outgoing, friendly folk, but you certainly seem to bring out the best in us buttoned up Brits because we assume it means you like us!PipneyJane said: I remember going to work in Birmingham for a couple of weeks in 2001 and being startled that strangers smiled at me and said hello. *Mutters* I'm sure I saw this cheaper in that little shop in Much Mending...CAFCGirl said:I've already been caught out multiple times by all the 'Hello's, Morning, All reet?' by random people in such a manner that they have me thinking I must have met them previously LOL We just don't do that kind of thing in the South....
I've lived both north and south and come to the conclusion people are friendly in both, but it's shown in different ways. I do like that up here I can get into a conversation with a stranger over something and nothing, but I don't feel people aren't friendly down south. Up here I'm an 'off-cummed un' (and there's a whole community of us, though I've never actually heard a Yorkshire person use that phrase). I've learned to assume anyone I speak to might be related to A N Other who I met in a different context, as there are big extended families. Examples would be a colleague who turned out to be the aunt of someone who was in my Sunday School class twenty years ago, or a boy across the road whose half sister was also half sister to the exquisite child at playground in the next village and who was also the nephew of a friend from church whose grown-up daughter turned out to work at the same place as me and I met them all separately.
Incidentally I've been here many years now though the first thirty years of my life were lived in various other places, but I still get a thrill that I live in an area where I can legitimately use 'thou' in a sentence, even if it's pronounced 'tha'.
Sorry for the rambling digression.

I do agree, its probably just shown in differing ways and with some cross cultural influence as well.
I do think I'm giving off 'Southerner' vibes here though
Side note - I think I will be spending some coupons today!
ETA: 9 coupons on yarn for the next big loom knitting project. Hopefully it will arrive in time for the rainy days predicted at the end of the week so I can sit about with my documentaries and loom awayWealth is not measured by currency9 -
The rain has arrived in my part of Yorkshire today, not a heavy shower and get it over with but light rain falling constantly making everything wet if you're not careful as it is too light to need a coat. I hope it waits to travel further north until your yarn arrives @CAFCGirlFashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent
