Cost per portion?

Actually, although not a vegetarian, I make a fairly convincing veggie burger - I make up a batch every so often - grated onions, carrots, mushrooms whizzed up in the food processor, add a drained tin of beans (or a portion of your own if you use dried beans), an egg and enough breadcrumbs (from odds and ends of loaves, kept in the freezer,) and/or flour to hold it together with whatever herbs and spices I feel like, whizz it all up in the food processor (or you could mash it with a fork) and put it in a tub in the fridge (if using immediately) or the freezer (if not). About 3-4 oz each makes a substantial meal with a roll and some chips, I reckon I get about 6-8 meals easily from this.freyasmum said:One of our current favourite cheap (to us) meals is homemade beef burgers.
I've never costed it up but I reckon it wouldn't be more than a couple of quid for the lot, which is at most 34p per portion for the burger - assuming you do your own chips/oven wedges and buy a pack of 6 rolls for about £1, total cost per portion roughly 60p +fuel costs2024 Fashion on the Ration - 10/66 coupons used

I do the shopping and my husband does the cooking, usually from scratch. I use supermarket deliveries, veg box companies, farms, butcher, game dealer, foodservice companies and delicatessens. I have benchmark prices for basics, beyond which I don't want tp pay and a set budget. As long as I keep within my weekly budget, it doesn't matter whether I'm buying 3 packs of game casserole pieces or a pack of cod fillets, a wild mallard duck or 6 jars of dripping.
For me, sitting there saying this supper cost X wouldn't impress my husband. He already knows that I'm a good bargain hunter. I really don't like Excel either !1
